Tenerife North airport

Tenerife North airport is located 11km from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna at an altitude of 633m. TFN is considerably smaller and less developed and mainly serves local flights between the islands of the archipelago as well as some departures for mainland Spain and a scattering of European flights.  Tenerife South is by far the busiest of the two airports. In 1977, Tenerife North airport was scene of the worst accident in aviation history when a Pan Am Boeing 747 collided with a KLM Boeing 747 on the runway killing 583 people.  The accident was attributed largely to fog and consequently, a new airport was built in the South of the island near the coast where fog is very rare.
