Wifi on Tenerife

Four major boroughs of Tenerife now supply a free wifi network to visitors and residents alike - with the scheme expected to be extended all over the island in future.

The speed of public-access WiFi on Tenerife

WiFi on Tenerife is widely available – although the connection speeds can vary hugely from location to location. In terms of public WiFi access, at time of writing, the current network features 39 wifi hotspots in Adeje, Arona, Santiago del Teide and Puerto de la Cruz. The hotspots boast download speeds of at least 10Mbps – which can be increased to 20Mbps if demand requires. The access points are connected to a wireless network over the four municipalities.

63% of tourists to Tenerife use WiFi during their stay – with 32% of them searching for information about the island. You can find the free wireless hotspots at:

Adeje: Town Hall, entrance to Barranco del Infierno, Playa Fañabé Tourism Office, Playa Troya Tourism Office and at various beaches where the Council has concessions.

Arona: Town Hall, Los Cristianos harbour, Mirador de la Centinela, Las Galletas beachfront, Garañana park, Costa del Silencio coastal walk and various beaches where the council has concessions.

Santiago del Teide: Town Hall, Los Gigantes cliffs and various beaches where the council has concessions.

Puerto de la Cruz: Lago Martiánez, Botanical Gardens in La Orotova, Plaza del Charco, Fishing Port, Castillo de San Felipe, Playa Jardin, Plaza de los Reyes Católicos and Avenida de Colón.

Bars and restaurants with WiFi on Tenerife

As well as these public hotspots, the island has a comprehensive fibre network – and many of the more forward-thinking bars and restaurants offer access for free (well, in exchange for ordering food/drink). Of these, we’ve personally found the Da Angelo restaurant in Costa Adeje to be the quickest and most reliable – plus it has beautiful views at sunset over La Gomera. And, if you find yourself needing a break from work, it’s just a short two-minute walk to the beach.

Accommodation with WiFi on Tenerife

As you would expect, most accommodation has WiFi and net access on Tenerife however it’s not always provided for free within hotels and apartments. Consequently, you should be sure to check if WiFi comes as standard when booking your accommodation. Some hotels and apartments charge ridiculous prices for in-room access.

Digital Nomads on Tenerife

Just like many other places, Tenerife is now starting to attract a sizable contingent of Digital Nomads – those of us lucky enough to be able to work anywhere we can find an internet connection. Check Facebook for the various groups that have cropped up down here recently. As is common in other locations, these groups are increasingly forming shared communities which is helping make accommodation, trips, activities and excursions considerably cheaper.

A word of warning – and I still don’t fully understand why this is – but, when it’s cloudy on Tenerife or in times of an occasional storm, both the WiFi and TV signals take a hit. I would guess this is because the island uses satellite reception for its signals.
